Annual Meeting of GRUR

The German Association for the Protection of Intellectual Property (Deutsche Vereinigung für Gewerblichen Rechtsschutz und Urheberrecht e.V.)

TIPLO is pleased to extend details of a noteworthy IP event taking place in Stuttgart May 21-23, 2008

This meeting includes various talks and podium discussions; usually attracting an average of 700 participants every year. In 2008, simultaneous translation from German into English and vice versa will be provided for the first time in order to better display the European profile of our association and to enable a larger, more international public to attend and follow the conference. Besides, several international speakers and panellists, such as Sir Robin Jacob, Rt. Hon. Lord Justice of Appeal at the Court of Appeal in London, Rudolf Moegele, Director Agriculture and Rural Development DG at the European Commission, João Miranda de Sousa, Director General Affairs and Relations Department at OHIM and JUDr. Zuzana Slovàkà, Head of Law Section of the Czech Industrial Property Office in Prague – to name but a few - have been invited to hold speeches on relevant IP matters and confirmed their attendance. Of course, leading German IP experts and practitioners will be represented amongst or panellists and guests too. For more information on our association, its Annual Meetings and other activities,

Sir Nicholas Pumfrey

It is with deep sadness that TIPLO has to pass on the sad news following release sent by Richard Trout, clerk to Lord Justice Pumfrey.

"In case you not have already heard the news through other channels, it is my painful and immensely sad duty to report that Sir Nicholas Pumfrey died suddenly at his home in London, as the result of a stroke, early on Christmas Eve.

At the age of only 56, his is a tragic and incalculable loss:  primarily, of course, for his close family, at this of all times, but also for his many friends and colleagues, especially those of the Patent Bench and Bar; for the Court of Appeal in which he had just begun serving, and not least for Sir Nicholas himself, at the very start of this new phase of his career, to which he had been so looking forward and which he was already so enjoying".

His funeral will be held at the Temple Church, Strand, London on Monday 14th January at 4.30pm.

Christopher David Floyd , Q.C.

HM The Queen has been pleased to approve the appointment of Christopher David Floyd, Q.C., to be a Justice of the High Court. The Lord Chief Justice will assign Mr. Floyd to the Chancery Division.

Mr. Floyd, 55, was called to the Bar by the Inner Temple in 1975 and took Silk in 1992. He was appointed a Recorder in 1994 and is approved to sit as a deputy High Court Judge.

The appointment takes effect from 5th November 2007.

Anna Carboni

TIPLO passes on congratulatins to Anna who has become an Appointed Person under the Trade Marks Act 1994. Very much in the manner of Chancery Division judges (but without the risk of being appealed against), Appointed Persons hear appeals from the Trade Marks Registry.

Says Anna: "I am delighted and honoured to have been appointed to this position. There have been a lot of interesting developments in trade mark law recently, so I am particularly looking forward to being involved in the decision-making process".

Anna also recently conquered Mount Kilimanjaro to raise more than £11,500 for ActionAid.
